Nantywylan Wood
About
This 10-acre woodland near the small village of Dolau is being managed for wildlife to thrive. The current owners purchased the land around 25 years ago when it had been felled for softwood like spruce and larch. The owners set about replanting it with deciduous trees such as horse chestnut, oak, ash and birch. Except for some casualties to Ash Dieback, the woodland has matured well over the years and is now also home to several self-seeded species such as willow as well as many native woodland plants like honeysuckle and wild raspberry.

Our Work
Nantywylan Wood had been left unmanaged for quite some time. Last year we funded its sympathetic management and our team set about thinning the rampant silver birch and willow to strengthen the other trees and allow for more species variety. Hazel has also been coppiced, letting more sunlight reach the woodland floor and paths have been cleared for educational access. We’re also in the process of removing the old plastic tree guards and, as the trees are not quite mature enough to have natural hollows yet, we have erected several multispecies bird boxes across the site along with some larger boxes for tawny owls.
This now flourishing woodland is abundant with wildlife and being used by many species including - Roe Deer, Pole Cats, Hares, Foxes, Weasels, Pied Flycatchers, Jays, Tawny Owls and we’re very pleased to have also spotted woodcock. We hope that in the near future local community groups will also be able to make use of this beautiful site.
