Cefnmachllys

About

A smallholding of 30 acres, Cefnmachllys is truly a haven for wildlife.

Since 2013, Sam and Helena have carefully restored the farmhouse, woodlands and meadows of Cefnmachllys, guided by organic principles and traditional conservation techniques.

They have already introduced an array of nature-friendly projects on the farm; hedge-laying, coppicing, planting cover crops, wetland creation and even establishing a new woodland in honour of their wedding.

What we’ve got planned

The first stage of the project will be to provide five dormouse boxes to replace the old ones in the woodland which have become damp and rotten. The nest-boxes will be closely monitored for signs of dormouse activity. The woodland is home to a fantastic range of species including: Oak, Ash, Wild Cherry, Goat Willow, Guelder Rose, Wych Elm and Scots Pine.

The next phase of the project will be to work with Sam and Helena to create a biennial wild bird cover crop that runs alongside an existing hedgerow. The cover crop will provide shelter and food for all of the birds that call Cefnmachllys home. Over the years Sam has recorded Starlings, Swallows, House Martins, Coal tits, Willow tits, Marsh tits, Great tits, Blue tits, Long-tailed tits, Siskins, Greenfinch, Chaffinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Dipper, Woodcock, Snipe, Buzzard, Red Kite, Sparrow Hawk, Lapwing, Curlew, Blackbird, Robin, Grey Wagtail, Pied Wagtail, Goldfinch, Red Start, Red poll, House Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, Dunnock, Nuthatch, Magpie, Jay, Wren, Raven, Rook, Wood Pigeon, Canada Geese, Mallard, Tawny Owl, Long-eared Owl, Crow, Jackdaw, Pheasant, Fieldfare, Redwing, Mistle Thrush, Pied Flycatcher, Heron, Garden Warbler, Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Bullfinch, Stock Dove, Tree Creeper, Song Thrush, Willow Warbler, Collared Dove, Barn owl, Yellow Hammer...

The final step will be to create a wildlife pond near to the threshing barn. The old stone barn is frequented by owls, bats and birds who will make full use of the water and the insects that it supports. The pond will also offer sanctuary to some of the other wildlife that can be found here such as Toad, Frog, Palmate Newt, Smooth Newt, Common Lizard, Hedgehog, Brown Hare, Fox, Badger, Weasel, Polecat, Mole…

This project will do so much for nature. Help us to achieve this by donating.
