About

At over 1,000m above sea level, this project is high!

A result of this altitude? This location is fully exposed to the elements.

Wern Farm is an upland hill farm, running a large flock. The sheep are well adapted the the high ground and harsh conditions.

There are a number of scots pines plantations that act as windbreaks on the hill but a lack of hedgerows means that there isn’t much shelter for crops, livestock and wildlife.

That’s where we come in…

What we’ve got planned

We’re going to create a 230m stretch of hedgerow.

Firstly, we need to replace the old fence line with a double fence that is 2m wide. This will allow enough room to create a really thick, strong hedge with space either side for rough grassland. (The fence will stop the saplings being eaten and trampled by the sheep).

Once the fence is established we will begin planting over 1,000 saplings. We will use a variety of species to really boost the biodiversity of the hedge but will also ensure that the species are hardy enough for the wet soil and prevailing winds of the project site.
