About
Hedge-laying, like hedge-cutting- can only be done during the winter months. This makes it easier as the lack of foliage means branches are easier to untangle and it also means that nesting birds aren’t disturbed.
This 50m stretch of hedgerow had grown tall enough to lay. The hedge runs alongside a ditch which feeds into a larger stream and connects two patches of woodland. Laying this hedge will help maintain and improve this habitat as well as preserve a traditional countryside craft.
Our Work
We covered the cost of materials for this project. To keep the laid branches in place hedging stakes are used. We purchased 250 stakes from our local timber merchants with delivery this cost £264.00 although we have got some stakes left over.
Our contractor Rhys is self taught at hedge-laying. It took him about 6 hours to lay this 50m stretch using a chainsaw and billhook.
